Best Weekend in Des Moines

After a long winter, a weekend of blue skies and 70 degrees is almost enough to make me forget that in February I made Adam promise me that at some point in our lives we would live somewhere WARMER (and south) of Iowa.

Now that I’m home during the week, I think I appreciate weekends with Adam even more. I’m a social person and like to have people to talk to and entertain me, so I tend to fill our schedule on the weekend with things to do and places to see. Sometimes Adam would prefer to stay home and veg, which we still do, but this weekend it was too nice to be inside.

Here’s our recipe for a perfect weekend in Des Moines (I hope we’ll be repeating it over the next couple months)
1. Wake up Saturday morning and head to the Farmer’s Market! Eat breakfast burritos, pastries, samples and coffee. Look for people we know and buy basil and cilantro to grow all summer!
2. Go to Home Depot and get flowers!
3. Put air in our bike tires and go for the first ride of the year!
4. Watch Adam hit golf balls and sit in the sun (I even hit a few balls, still not sure if I’m ready for a real course yet)
5. Go to a drive-in movie!
Neither of us had ever been to a drive-in before and had heard about one in Newton (about 45 minutes away). Lucky for Adam they were playing the new X-Men movie Wolverine (I wouldn’t have gone to see it if it wasn’t the drive-in. We popped our bags of popcorn, stopped at a gas station on the way for soda and candy and drove out to the big screen.

It was just how I imagined a drive-in to be: lots of families and pick up trucks, blankets and lawn chairs, kids playing catch and running between cars before the show. I will say we don’t have the most comfortable car to sit in and watch a movie, but it was still great, and the movie was better than I expected. Next time we’ll find someone with a truck and take a group out.
