Container Gardening

img_0529

While we wait to move to a house with a yard and enough sunshine to grow tomatoes I am contenting myself with gardening on our balcony. Every morning I head outside to check on my plants and tell them good morning. Adam laughs at me and calls me a “plant mom” but they make me so happy!

The pansies in the hanging basket seem especially cheerful, don’t you think? I don’t know many plant names, but pansies are one that is embedded in my mind thanks to my mom. I don’t know if they’re her favorite flower, but we always had them in the yard growing up. Usually I’m not a huge fan of purple flowers, but I couldn’t resist these. And I think they like our shady balcony.

img_0530I think this plant is my favorite (anyone know what it’s called? I think it may be some kind of rose). Seriously, every morning I squat down in front of it like a little kid and count how many blooms there are (it’s the little things in life). I especially love the combination of the pink and orange blossoms. They’re so bright and happy! And look! My first yellow bloom in the back.

Unfortunately the basil plant I bought at the Farmer’s Market a few weeks ago doesn’t seem to be thriving. Adam says I put it in too big of a pot, but I think it just didn’t like it when I tried to divide it. So I need to get some more so I can start making pesto!

Other years we’ve put up window boxes too, but we held off since we’re still hoping to  move this summer…
