Container Gardening
While we wait to move to a house with a yard and enough sunshine to grow tomatoes I am contenting myself with gardening on our balcony. Every morning I head outside to check on my plants and tell them good morning. Adam laughs at me and calls me a “plant mom” but they make me so happy!
The pansies in the hanging basket seem especially cheerful, don’t you think? I don’t know many plant names, but pansies are one that is embedded in my mind thanks to my mom. I don’t know if they’re her favorite flower, but we always had them in the yard growing up. Usually I’m not a huge fan of purple flowers, but I couldn’t resist these. And I think they like our shady balcony.
I think this plant is my favorite (anyone know what it’s called? I think it may be some kind of rose). Seriously, every morning I squat down in front of it like a little kid and count how many blooms there are (it’s the little things in life). I especially love the combination of the pink and orange blossoms. They’re so bright and happy! And look! My first yellow bloom in the back.
These red guys are nice too. Not sure what they’re called, but I liked the color.
Unfortunately the basil plant I bought at the Farmer’s Market a few weeks ago doesn’t seem to be thriving. Adam says I put it in too big of a pot, but I think it just didn’t like it when I tried to divide it. So I need to get some more so I can start making pesto!
Other years we’ve put up window boxes too, but we held off since we’re still hoping to move this summer…

Andrea–The red ones in the last photo look like calibrachoa, otherwise known as “Million Bells.” It looks like the scarlet color.
Yay for potted plants! Just wait until you have a yard. Then buying flowers and veggies and such gets really addictive …
