Walking to work

walking20shoesI love walking to work. If you live in a big city walking to work, or anywhere for that matter, is a given, but in a city the size of Des Moines it’s so common. I currently live 5 blocks from work. Considering that I used to walk a little more than a mile to work, this is a piece of cake. My other incentive for walking is that parking is limited at the University where I work. Honestly, most days it’s easier to walk than worry about finding a parking spot.

Lately the mornings are cool and I love making my way down Grand with my lunch bag in hand along with the other med students living in the neighborhood. (Some days I pretend I’m a med student myself, since I know that is something I will never be it seems very elusive.

Walking in the mornings is a great way to get ready for the day. It gets my blood flowing and makes me eager for my first cup of coffee. One thing I miss is listening to NPR on the drive, even though it’s only a few minutes. I will admit that there are some Wed where I purposefully drive just so I can listen to Frank DeFord. I’m not a huge sports fan, I just love listening to his voice and the stories he tells!

With the change of seasons I’m contemplating buying a pair of boots to get me from Point A to Point B. I also picked up a trendy trench coat at the outlet mall last weekend. It will finally be cool enough to wear this week. I figure if I’m walking I need to dress the part, right? Adam on the hand says everything comes back to the shoes, which is partially true.

My goal is to keep walking throughout the winter, but we’ll see how that goes. I may change my tune when it’s below zero, snowy and windy. Maybe Adam will drop me off then.

I love that I can totally relate to this! I walk to “work” everyday too!! Actually, I walk everywhere I go. I can’t think of the last time I drove anywhere. It’s so much fun, isn’t it! Crisp mornings, warm afternoons, or even chilly rain. Always an adventure. HAH
