Social Media Jobs

A friend sent me a link to this story, Tweeting Your Way to a Job in the New York Times. It’s definitely worth checking out if you are at all interested in social media. It’s crazy to think that in less than 2 weeks I will be starting a job (more on this to come!) that involves social media. And I probably wouldn’t have gotten the job if I wasn’t on Twitter.Through Twitter I started talking to people at the place I had applied and had a connection with them before I even went in for an interview. This wouldn’t pertain to all jobs, but the job I was applying for dealt specifically with online marketing, so it was a perfect connection.

I was skeptical about Twitter when I first signed up. I already had facebook and linkedin and didn’t think I needed another account to maintain, much less a place to keep people up to date on what I was doing every moment of the day. I was wrong. First of all, during the months that I’ve been working from home Twitter has become a social lifeline or watercooler of sorts. It is how I keep up with people while I’m working away, by myself. It’s how I find out what’s going on in Des Moines, alert people to things I’m reading online, and stay on top of what’s happening in social media. And it really does generate conversations both with people you know and with people you don’t know. Sure, it may not be for everyone, but it’s worth a try. If you do sign up, make sure to look me up: @andreacooley, and I highly recommend downloading TweetDeck to organize the people you follow.

What does everyone else think about Twitter? Have you heard of any other interesting social media related jobs?
